  • Development Trend of Analysis of Anthracite
    China is the major production and consumption country, which will affect the development of the entire industry. In the past six years, North Korea is the main importers for China. The import share for China increased from 30.95% to 84.78% mainly because of reducing the export volume for Vietnam.

    Anthracite in North Korea has the characteristics of low ash, low sulfur, low volatile, high fixed carbon, less soot in combustion, less environmental pollution and can reduce the burden of blast furnace equipment, extend the service life of the equipment. In addition to quality factor, the price is far below domestic anthracite and this is the key factor why China choose this kind of coal.

    For North Korea’s fifth nuclear test, the United Nations has imposed new sanctions and the coal exports can not exceed 7.5 million tons. Anthracite is the main coal type and almost all are exported to China. In a short period of time, it will form a certain impact on China anthracite market. China will turn to Russia and Australia to make up.
    The import volume reduces 51.50% for North Korea and increased 210.72% for Russia and 107.20% for Australia. This means it will pull the increase for Russia and Australia in some extent.

    However, in the long run, the impact caused by North Korea is relatively limited.

    Firstly, the import volume and share reached the highest in 2016 and it just accounted for 7.34%. China is still in a state of excess capacity and the manufacturers can supplement the gap in a great extent.

    Secondly, the North Korea anthracite is mainly in electricity industry and steel industry. For steel industry, the cost of anthracite occupies a small proportion and it has little effect on steel market.
    The effect in mainly concentrated in electricity industry used as the blending coal. At the same time, the Chinese government is developing new energy and has strong determination to stop coal mines and develop clean energy.

    In short, the import reduce from North Korea will lead to the pulling effect for Russia and Australia and the price will also rise in some extent. However, the effect is relatively limited.

    With the increase in domestic demand in Vietnam and export policy adjustments, this country will occupy an important status and its net import volume will become larger.

    The “Eastern military operation” of Ukraine made the government lose the control of Donbass, which is the main region for coal in Ukraine. Since then, Ukraine production suffered significant decline and had to import from other countries.

    Ukraine now is trying to get rid of the usage volume and transfer to other energy, such as natural gas.
